Understanding Stress
What causes something to go from mildly stressful to totally overwhelming and what does this mean for you?
We all experience stress in our lives. When that stress is ongoing and accumulates we may find our resilience wanes. It can become especially challenging to get through our daily lives feeling grounded and calm.
Stressful situations can come up for us in a number of ways – financial pressures, family disharmony, relationship breakdowns, ill health … the list goes on. We start to feel overwhelmed more often than not, and this shows up in our busy minds and tense bodies.
The Impact of Stress on Our Bodies
When our bodies are feeling stressed (whether it’s from a real or imagined threat) our sympathetic nervous system is activated. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and in fact is a positive response to fear. But problems arise when we’re constantly engaged in this response. Our body and mind struggle to relax and we hold onto feelings and memories – in fact we store them in our bodies. Studies even show that constantly being engaged in the sympathetic nervous system response can lead to physical pain and illness.
But it’s not all bad news. Our bodies provides us with a doorway to healing – if we choose to walk through it. Somatic therapy allows us to communicate with our body and our senses. Connecting deeply with them through supported work in psychotherapy. This allows us to acknowledge our pain and create a space for healing and transformation to occur.
Overcoming Stress
We also want to build our resilience and learn how to more readily activate and live from our parasympathetic nervous system that is our relaxation response. This is the place where we feel safe and relaxed – but it’s hard to do this if we aren’t acknowledging the wounds within us that need healing.
The more we acknowledge our inner wounds and the more we release the accumulated stress we carry, the freer we become to move forward with joy towards our future.
